Morning Routine
Math – We continued to learn about 3-D shapes. We built our own cubes and labelled the faces, edges, and vertices.
Recess
Daily 5 – We reviewed all of the CAFE strategies that we know so far and how to use them. We had a mini-lesson on a new fluency strategy, “Pay attention to punctuation” and practiced with a partner. We played a quick Word Work game before lunch.
Lunch
Science – We continued to work on our understanding and the vocabulary of the water cycle.
French – Mme. Jasper
Recess
Drama – We did a visualization activity and then acted out the water cycle.

Math – We learned 2 new centres. During centres I finished off the last few 2-D shape assessments and worked with those who needed additional practice.

PWIM – We started off a new cycle of PWIM featuring pictures of different forms of precipitation (to go along with our Science unit on Air & Water).
Quiet Time – We read another chapter of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.

Morning Routine
Math – We learned 4 new centres. I worked with almost all of the class today on naming 2-D shapes and identifying their characteristics.
Recess
Daily 5 – Hi-5 Groups – I read with Dominic, Caden, Maggie, Sidd, Chase, Kellan, Ava, and Grayson.

Recess
Science – We discussed, observed, and experienced water in all 3 of its states. We considered what it looks like, feels like, and how it acts in each state.
Clean-Up
****Invitations to our Celebration of Learning day on March 24th were sent home today. Let me know if the time indicated does not work for you. With this format, I can have up to 4 families in the classroom at one time as activities are student directed, so I am fairly flexible with adjusting the schedule!
****Tomorrow is Special Lunch day.
*****Book orders are due tomorrow.

Morning Routine/Math – We talked about how prefixes like “tri”, “hex”, and “oct”, actually represent how many sides a shape has.
Recess
Daily 5 – We learned a new CAFE Strategy, “Skip a word and then come back” and practiced with a round of Read to Someone. We played a Word Work game with words with “er” in them which earned the class a point because they came up with WAY more words than I could.
Lunch
Genius Hour – We had a solid hour to work today and some AMAZING things came out of it! A water filtering machine and soap shoes (for people that don’t want to bend down to clean the floor) are a few examples of some of the neat stuff the students are working on!
Recess
Science – We learned about wind and how wind is made. I gave the class homework – they are to teach someone at home about how wind is created.
Clean-Up
Morning Routine
Math – We considered the statement “every square is a rectangle, but NOT every rectangle is a square.” We learned 4 new geometry centres.
Recess
Daily 5 – We learned a CAFE strategy for comprehension, “Retell the story in sequence” and practiced doing so. When we retell a story we need to tell the characters, setting, problem, beginning, middle, and ending.
Lunch
Science – We did another experiment to prove that air takes up space. Ask your child about our experiment! They were mind-blown!

Arts Ed. – We played charades and finished acting out the last of our health scenarios.
Quiet Time & Clean-Up
****The Carmichael Outreach container drive is this week. We are collecting empty and CLEAN containers with lids that are over 250 mL. No glass please. (ex: yogurt container, margarine container).
Morning Routine
Math – We started our geometry unit. This week we will be focusing on 2-D shapes. We looked at the characteristics of a variety of shapes and considered where we see 2-D shapes in the world.
Recess
Daily 5 – Hi-5 Groups. I read with Sam, Nev, Emery, Luke, Max, and Leica.
Lunch
Talking Circle – The students considered what they would like to learn about in Science.
Science – We started off our first Science unit which is about air and water. We considered some of the characteristics of air and water and did an experiment with a balloon to see how air takes up space.

Daily 5 – We added a new strategy to our CAFE board that will help us with comprehension of nonfiction texts. We did one round of Read to Someone to practice our new strategy and did a Word Work activity with this week’s sight words.

Desk/Carpet Spot Changes – New month, new spots!

Genius Hour – We began the planning phase of our inventions.
Recess
Health – We talked about personal information and why we should not give this to strangers. We did an activity to assess our understanding of all of the topics we have discussed in our Health block – healthy snacking, showing respect, and keeping ourselves safe when risks are present.
