Morning Routine

Math – We practiced adding/subtracting multiples of 10 with a partner game called “Hit the Target”.

Recess

Daily 5 – The students read the responses in their News Duotangs. Please remember to check your child’s backpack on the weekend for their News Duotang so that you can write a response to them. We take turns sharing with the class what parents wrote as an opportunity to practice reading to an audience. Using our story-starter wheels, the class started writing a fiction stories about a fish who had a birthday party or a dinosaur making a snowman.

Lunch

Genius Hour Presentations – Luke and Dominic taught us about making candy and Annalise and Nikita shared with us about doctors.

Health – The class finished up their “sick stories”. Students who finished worked on a unit related word-search.

French – Mme. Jasper

Recess

Drama – We played charades as a class.

Quiet Time – We finished chapter 10 of our novel.

***Just a reminder to send proper outdoor gear with your child every day. Students are coming in soaked after recess due to the warm temperatures and rain. In addition to requiring outdoor gear for recesses, we will be going snowshoeing a few times between February 3rd and 9th.

Morning Routine/Spelling Words

Math – We looked at subtracting 2-digit numbers with no regrouping. We learned 2 new centres, Bump, and Dinosaur Subtraction.

Daily 5 – Weekend News Duotangs/Lockdown Drill. Due to the lockdown drill, which began right as we started working on our News Duotangs, we had significantly less time than usual to work on them, meaning many students only had time to do the sentences off the board.

Lunch

Genius Hour Presentations – We had 2 presentations today – Phil and Parker taught us some magic tricks and Max shared with us his project on drawing wolves.

Health – We continued to work on our “sick stories”. Many students finished their good copies today, however, some students still have not completed their rough copies. Students who have not yet completed their rough copies have their stories in their backpack to finish at home.

Math – We played a game of subtraction bingo as a class. We learned 3 new subtraction centres. During math centres I worked with Emery, Luke, and Max.

Daily 5 – We talked about some new procedures and activities for Work on Writing and Word Work. We did one round of Hi-5 Groups and read a chapter of our novel.

Lunch

Phys. Ed. – We worked on overhand throwing.

Health – We talked about symptoms and names of common illnesses. We did a poll about which common illnesses we have had and created a bar graph.

Daily 5 – Phil and Parker read their News Duotang responses to us. We filled out story writing templates based on the events of the “sick stories” we shared last week in Health. We did 2 quick rounds of Read to Someone with different partners.

Lunch

Genius Hour – Groups shared how much more time they will need to finish off their Genius Hour projects and we planned dates for presentations. During our work period, many groups worked on their presentations. I will be emailing parents with presentation dates tomorrow, for those parents interested in coming to watch. I will be posting presentation videos on Seesaw as well – both for the kids to watch themselves and for those parents unable to make it.

I was quite embarrassed when I realized last night that I had be dating the majority of my posts this year with the year “2016”…Oops! My mistake!

Morning Routine

Math – We did our final review of adding 2-digit numbers to 100. We learned 2 new math centres. During math centres I worked with Annalise, Parker, Erik, Madi, Caden, Leica, Grayson, and Sidd. We will be moving on to 2-digit subtraction next week!

Daily 5 – We did 3 rounds of Hi-5 Groups. I read with Caden and Nev.

Lunch

Novel Study – We read chapter 2 of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

Health – In pairs, the students started posters that will be displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway. The posters are to educate others about ways that germs are spread, and how to stop the spread of germs.

Morning Routine

Math – Yay! Most students are successfully grasping 2-digit addition! It is so awesome to see the class experiencing success with this by using the strategy that works best for them. After fixing up some minor corrections on this week’s mad minute, the students worked on math centres while I worked with Charlie, Dominic, Tiago, Chase, Luke, Kellan, Maggie, and Emery.

Daily 5 – We learned a new CAFE accuracy strategy and practiced while reading “Octopuppy” by Martin McKenna as a class. The students did one round of Read to Someone while I did reading assessments. Before lunch, we practiced the tricky spelling words from past weeks. Students who struggled with these know that they need to go home and practice as next week we will be going through all of the words.
